The Abigail Phelps Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution is sponsoring an American History Essay Contest for students in grades five through eight. All students who attend public or private schools in the Farmington Valley as well as home schooled students are invited to participate.
The topic is “March 22, marks the 250th anniversary of the Stamp Act. Passed by the British Parliament in 1765, this new tax required all colonists to pay a tax on every printed piece of paper they used. The Stamp Act was viewed by the colonists as taxation without representation. Describe a colonial family’s discussion about the new Stamp Act and what role it played in organizing the colonists against the British King and Parliament.”
A $100 prize will be awarded for the first place essay for each grade. Contact Sherry Griffith at 860-987-2150 or your child’s school principal for complete information and contest rules.
