Paula Johnson named Republican of the year

By Mark Neumann and Diane Hernsdorf

Paula Johnson was recognized as Granby’s Republican of the Year at the 7th Senatorial District Lincoln Day Dinner on March 20.

In her years of volunteer service to the citizens of Granby, Johnson has mentored 4-H Pony Club, been a director for the Community Fund, a member of the Commission on Aging, served as municipal Agent for the Elderly over a 10-year period, set up programs at the Senior Center, found resources for the Senior Van and helped schedule the rides.

In 1987 Johnson ran for her first elective position on the Planning and Zoning Commission. Under her guidance as chair, the commission has written one Master Plan for the Town and two Plans of Conservation and Development. There was a study of the aquifer flowing under part of Granby, the establishing of the Agriculture and Farm regulations and updating of regulations guiding Town Center development. She has always invited participation in sub-committee study groups to anyone willing to serve.

Johnson spends her time and talent working under the radar to help Granby. The town is the beneficiary of her knowledge and understanding of rules and regulations, and the even-handedness with which she conducts the town’s business.

Johnson’s love of Granby extends to her active participation in the Granby Land Trust, the Senior Center, and the Camera Club. She and her husband, Whitey, have lived in West Granby since 1961 where they raised their sons Keith, Eric and Russell who have blessed the family with five grandchildren.
