GMHS Drama Club presents Arsenic and Old Lace Nov. 15-18

By Emily Cote

The GMHS Drama Club is very excited about the upcoming season, featuring an incredible cast and introducing the new direction team of Nikki Currie-Huggard and Karen Kudish. This coming fall, the GMHS Drama Club invites you to the HS production of Arsenic and Old Lace, a wonderfully dark comedy.

This play revolves around the Brewster family, descended from the Mayflower, but now mostly insane homicidal maniacs. The hero, Mortimer Brewster, a drama critic, is engaged to the preacher’s daughter, Elaine and must deal with his crazy, homicidal, family made up of two spinster aunts who have taken to murdering lonely old men by poisoning them with a glass of home-made elderberry wine laced with arsenic, strychnine, and “just a pinch” of cyanide; a brother who believes he is Theodore Roosevelt and digs locks for the Panama Canal in the cellar of the Brewster home; and a murderous brother with an alcoholic accomplice, Dr. Einstein.  All in all, quite the interestingly mixed group of insanity.

This play is based on true events that took place in Windsor. Amy Archer-Gilligan, born in 1783, married and allegedly killed three of her husbands, and murdered between 20 and 60 elderly boarders that stayed in her nursing home.  Gilligan had stored copious amounts of arsenic in the basement, but claimed it was being used as rat poison. Gilligan finally faced trial and was declared insane and was sent to a mental hospital, where she died at age 89.

We ask you all to come and see our adaptation of this gruesome tale. Believe us when we say that you’ll certainly die laughing!

Arsenic and Old Lace will be presented Thursday, Nov. 15, Friday, Nov. 16 and Saturday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 18 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $12; $10 for students.
